Head and Neck Cancer

Did you know that head and neck cancer is becoming more common nowadays, especially in some areas of Merseyside? Head and Neck Cancer can be treated successfully if it is found early – but ignoring the signs can cut your chances of recovering from it.

That’s why our practice is taking part in an initiative to get people who are at risk and who have signs of head and neck cancer to contact an NHS hotline when they may be given a hospital appointment for a check-up.

You may be sent a text with this information asking you to contact the hotline if you have symptoms. It probably won’t be cancer but it is worth putting your mind at rest and getting checked out.

People aged over 45 from Liverpool postcodes L5, L6 and L7 who smoke or have smoked in the past, and who have had a hoarse voice or a lump on their neck – or both – for three weeks or more, should ring the NHS Aintree Hospital team on 0151 529 6417 (Monday to Friday, 9am-3pm) during February to see if they need to be checked by a doctor.

It probably won’t be cancer, but after a chat over the phone you may be offered a hospital check-up. But please be aware that this clinic is only running during February 2025.

Please don’t ignore it – that phone call could save your life.
